An absolute powerhouse of women stormed through Chicago Wednesday night as part of The Wild Hearts Tour. The three headlining ladies — Julien Baker, Sharon Van Etten, and Angel Olsen–each played sets that awoke the souls of concert goers and had them singing, dancing, and enjoying a perfect summer night at Chicago’s newest venue, The Salt Shed.
Julien Baker first came into my life when I heard “Souvenir”, a song she played with the supergroup boygenius. The crisp guitar and her flawless voice made me curious about her solo work. When I heard that she was coming to town, I knew I wanted to review her set.
Baker’s first release since Covid, 2021’s Little Oblivions, made up most of Wednesday’s setlist. This album features a fuller sound than her previous work, as Baker recorded on multiple instruments while recording the album. Backed by her band, old songs were given more depth and her discography translated beautifully into a live setting. Her richly textured music spilled out over the crowd and the dreamy tunes created a beautiful atmostphere at the venue. Wearing her heart on her sleeve, Baker’s crystal clear voice was filled with emotion as she sang her, very often, devastingly honest lyrics to the crowd. Throughout her set, she created the perfect balance of softer songs and full-throddle rocking songs which kept those at The Salt Shed eager for more.
