Mid December, I joined a crowd quite unlike any other I had ever seen. Packed with parents, siblings, friends, and fellow musicians, I witnessed the incredible talent of Naperville’s School of Rock musicians.
The showcase took place at Bottom Lounge and featured music from famous recording studios like Abbey Road, Electric Lady, Motown, and Muscle Shoals. I was there to see the Sound City set which featured artists who recorded at the legendary studio prior to its 2011 demise. Their set included songs by Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Blind Melon, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, War, and more.
I’m not sure what I was expecting of them, but I was blown away by their full sound and skillful playing. I, a 27 year old who wishes she were musically gifted, was in awe of how young and accomplished they all were. These up and
coming musicians moved fluidly between instruments like seasoned pros with each new song. Armed with a killer setlist and rotating musicians as they went, their fifty minute set went by quickly.
School of Rock is doing amazing things. They are helping young musicians develop and further their skills while giving them the experience of performing in front of a live audience. For more information on Naperville’s School of Rock, click here.
